Current situation The use of an aircraft toilet is associated with great difficulties for many mobility-impaired persons or might even be not possible at all. Depending on the specific mobility impairment, there are different and often contradictory requirements for the design of toilets to enable their use, which, however, often conflict with technical possibilities in aircraft construction or the economic framework conditions of airlines.

Project objectives In the Lavatory4All project, potential users, aviation companies and suppliers were working together to develop the fundamental principles for a comprehensively accessible aircraft toilet that meets the high requirements of aviation in terms of safety and cost-effectiveness, while at the same time providing clear benefits for all passengers, especially those with limited mobility.

Accessible aircraft toilets must be designed from a holistic perspective so that they meet the diverse requirements of all persons, regardless of disability (“universal design”). At the same time, they must also meet the high demands of aviation in terms of the best possible use of space, the safety of the materials required and the lowest possible weight.
